“NPP Will Not Postpone The 2020 General Election”- John Boadu

16/04/2020

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Mr. John Boadu has revealed that the ruling party has no intention of postponing the 2020 General Elections due to the outbreak of the novel virus in the country.

John Boadu opined that the NPP has faithfully executed its mandate and would want to avail itself to the verdict of the people at a time that falls within the confines of the constitution and so would not hide behind a pandemic to demand that the date be pushed farther, though “it is early days yet”.

Decisions about whether the 2020 General Election should be conducted or not are still unclear as the country records more cases of the deadly virus almost every day.

The ruling NPP, however, has suspended its well-publicized Presidential and parliamentary primaries scheduled for April, 25 due to the rapid spread of the deadly virus.

A statement released by the NPP on Tuesday said that; “The National Steering Committee, by reason of Article 10(10)(1) of the party’s constitution, is the body responsible for overseeing the daily management of the party, and thus, mandated to ‘act on behalf of the party on urgent matters’ such as in the circumstances we find ourselves as a party and nation owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“It would not come on as long as COVID-19 stays with us and there is a freeze on social gatherings; it would be organized in haste immediately we are able to conquer the disease and that is not in doubt,” John Boadu said, although it wasn’t mentioned as to when the General Election will be held.
