House Of Chiefs Get New President

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, Paramount Chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area, has defeated Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, to become new President of the National House of Chiefs.

The election was held in Kumasi yesterday and Togbe Afede XIV, who was seeking re-election, managed 25 votes compared to Ogyeahohoo Gyebi’s 47 votes.

Total votes cast was 72 with an eligible voter absent.

The Paramount Chief for the Lawra Traditional Area, Naa Puowele Karbo III, was elected as Vice-President after beating Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII of the Abeadze Traditional Area.

Naa Puowele Karbo III polled 44 votes against Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi’s 28 votes.

Togbe Afede is credited for working assiduously to ensure the renovation of the National House of Chiefs building at Manhyia, Kumasi.

Ogyeahohoo Gyebi, who will serve a four-year term, in his acceptance speech, said the success of the polls showed that there was peace in the House.

“We shall be your chief servants and at the same time your leaders,” he said, adding that he would welcome every opinion.

He said nobody won or lost the polls, saying “the victory belongs to every member of the House;” calling for total support.
