Auditor General Replies Akufo Addo, Says His Work is Embarrassing the Government

03/07/2020

Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo has in a statement responded to the directive by President Akufo Addo to take his accumulated annual leave.

According to Mr Domelevo, the directive is a response to the embarrasment his work is causing the government.

The statement, copied to the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, Yao Domelevo said the decision to instruct him to go on leave was not taken in good faith as there are other appointees who have equally not gone on leave either.

“I think it is necessary, however, to bring to the attention of the high office of the President a few matters relevant to our constitutional governance, due process and the rule of law,” the statement read.

The auditor general noted that he’s simply following the directive out of the respect he has for the Office and the President.

In response to handing over all matters relating to his office to the Deputy Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu until his return from his “well-deserved leave,” Mr Domelovo said that has serious implications for the constitutional independence of the Auditor-General.

He further urged President Akufo Addo to reconsider his directive in order to protect the sanctity of the labour law, the constitution and the independence of the Auditor General.
