Ashanti Region: Monday rains kill 2

Two people have drowned following Monday, 20 May 2019 torrential rains that flooded part of the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi and its adjoining districts.


Kofi Appiagyie, a 32-year-old taxi driver, drowned in Pelele river at Asawase when he attempted to cross a foot bridge that links Dechemso and Asawase in the Asokore Mampong Municipality.
Eyewitnesses told Class News’ regional correspondent Elisha Adarkwah that Mr Appiagyie who was allegedly drunk slipped and fell into the flooded river.


All efforts by some residents to rescue him proved futile.
In a related development, Ms Krosiya Awudu, a nine-year-old girl also drowned while playing with her age mates in the heavy downpour that started around 3:30pm and lasted for about two hours at Tafo Zongo in the Old Tafo Municipality.


Her mother, Salamatu Awudu said Ms Awudu had finished cleaning utensils and did not know the time she went out and got drowned.


Rescue team are still searching for the bodies of the duo.
Monday’s rain caused havoc to properties in Kumasi and displaced many people.


Some areas flooded by the rains include Atafoa, Dechemso, airport roundabout, Kumasi central market, Krofrom, Tafo Nhyiaeso road, Ahinsan, Anloga Junction among others.
