Newly-trained teachers in Ghana say they are “shocked” that GHS35 have been deducted from their June national service allowance without their consent.
They are demanding a refund.
According to the teachers, the leadership of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA), in an attempt to explain the deduction, said GHS20 would be used to provide t-shirts to personnel while the remaining GHS15 would be used to celebrate NASPA week.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we outrightly reject the ‘jerseys’ which have been supplied to us as t-shirts, and again we are not ready to celebrate the so-called NASPA week,” the teachers said in a statement.
Numbering 16,000, the aggrieved teachers said they were denied direct employment when they graduated in 2018 due to the introduction of the teacher licensure examination and have been forced to do national service, the first of its kind for newly-trained teachers from colleges of education in the country.
They are, therefore, calling on the management of the National Service Scheme to refund their money to them or face their wrath.
“We are currently in talks with our legal team, and, so, our next line of action shall be duly communicated,” the statement added.
