Ghanaians, active on X (formerly Twitter), are fiercely criticizing MTN Ghana for its sudden 15% surge in data charges, effective from November 28, 2023.
This hike results in users receiving reduced data allocations for the same previous price. Speculation arose earlier this year that this increase was governmental guidance to foster market competition, benefiting other telecom companies.
However, the populace is distressed about the already high cost of living in Ghana, seeing this price hike as compounding their financial burden.
A 2021 report by UK’s cable.co.uk revealed Ghana as having the most economical mobile internet pricing in sub-Saharan Africa, with 1GB of mobile data averaging at $0.66, making it one of the most affordable in the world and the cheapest in West Africa.
