The Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo has emerged winner in the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primary held today, Saturday in the area.
Adwoa Safo polled 496 votes while her opponent, Mike Oquaye Junior, who is Ghana’s Commissioner to India, garnered 488 votes.
This is the second time Mike Qquaye Junior is coming face to face with Adwoa Safo.
Oquaye Junior’s father, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye was the NPP Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya for two terms, from 2004 to 2012.
Prof. Oquaye later decided not to run for another term and sponsored his son, Mike Oquaye Jnr. to run as NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency in 2012.
Oquaye Junior, however, lost to Sarah Adwoa Safo, who won the seat during the general elections.
Formed prior to the 2004 elections after being carved out of then-Abokobi-Madina constituency, the Dome-Kwabenya constituency has been an NPP stronghold in the Greater Accra Region.
On the parliamentary side, the NDC is yet to cross the 40 percent mark in the constituency with its best performance coming in 2008 when Zita Okaikoi (as she then was) captured 39.5 per cent of the vote.
Adwoa Safo overcame Mike Oquaye Jnr and Robert Osei Bonsu in 2011 and trumped competition from Isaac Amofa.
