Valverde was dismissed on Monday evening, despite guiding the club to back-to-back La Liga titles and the team’s current place at the top of the table.
Barca had been considering Valverde’s position for several months but he was thought to have enough time to at least see out the season.

However, speculation mounted last week as Barca were beaten in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals by Atletico Madrid.

Setien, who led Betis to sixth and 10th placed finishes during his two seasons in charge, was confirmed as Valverde’s replacement on a two-and-a-half-year contract after legendary former player Xavi Hernandez turned down an offer from the club to take over the reigns, concluding the timing was not right.
