20/12/2019

English Premier Soccer League giants Arsenal have appointed former player and captain Spaniard Mikel Arteta. Mikel Arteta who was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City the last two years is a club legend who played for Arsenal for 5 seasons from 2011-2016.

Mikel Arteta’s appointment comes a few weeks following the sacking of Unai Emery who had failed to impose his philosophy amid poor results that left Arsenal losing a lot of games threatening their status as a top team. Arsenal are currently on the 10th position with 22 points.

Mikel Arteta is taking over from Freddie Ljungberg who had been the caretaker coach. Freddie Ljungberg was being assisted by Per Mertesacker. Mikel Arteta will start his new job on Sunday. Freddie Ljungberg will be in charge on tomorrow’s game against Everton.

Speaking to Arsenal, Mike Arteta had the following to say about his appointment:

“This is a huge honour. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game and that’s been made very clear to me in my discussions with Stan and Josh Kroenke, and the senior people from the club.

“We all know there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that but I am confident we’ll do it. I’m realistic enough to know it won’t happen overnight but the current squad has plenty of talent and there is a great pipeline of young players coming through from the academy.”

Mikel Arteta’s coaching staff has not yet been announced.
