03/04/2020

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, has stated that the country may not extend the two-week partial lockdown.

He revealed that the reason why the lockdown was initiated has so far been very successful and contact tracing in the past four days has been very effective.

He made this known when a Chinese delegation donated video conference facilities to the Ministry of Health and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).

On Friday, March 28, 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced a lockdown of certain parts of the country he believed were hotspots for the coronavirus.

The lockdown was supposed to take effect on the dawn of Monday, March 31, 2020, with essential service providers still working.

The affected cities mentioned by Akufo-Addo were Accra, Kumasi, Kasoa and Tema.

This announcement was made after several calls from various stakeholders like the Ghana Medical Association, and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) called on government to take the measure to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Before the president announced the lockdown, Bright Simons, the Vice President of Imani Ghana indicated that Ghana might be on lockdown beginning on Sunday, March 22, 2020, in a serious post.

In the post sighted by Vibeweek.com on the official Twitter handle of Bright Simons, he mentioned that the National Security Council has been strongly advising President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to activate a lockdown.

“Highly placed sources: Ghana’s Prez advised by Natl Secu Council to commence lockdown from tomorrow. We all agree that these are unprecedented times,” were his own words in a post made on March 21, 2020.
