GTA closes all Beaches over Coronavirus fears

23/03/2020

Beaches in Ghana have been closed by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) “until further notice”.

As a result, National Security operatives as well as officers of the Ghana Police Service will begin patrols along the beaches from Tuesday, March 24 “to ensure compliance with the closure”.

This comes in the wake of 24 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ghana. Already, one person has died from the viral disease.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has ordered all gatherings to cease as he has recommended social distancing.

A statement issued by the Authority on Monday said the closure comes as a follow-up to the president’s directive.

“The general public and tourist business operators are urged to be mindful of the precautionary measures announced by the President of the Republic to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Ghana recorded high tourists last year as a result of the ‘Year of Return’ but hoteliers have complained the outbreak of Covid-19 seems to be eroding all the profits made.
