Ghana fails on Penalties – again; Misses out on Tokyo 2020

The Black Meteors of Ghana failed to qualify to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, after losing to South Africa 5-6 on penalties in Friday’s third-place match in the U23 Africa Cup of Nations.


The U23 Afcon, despite being a full-blown tournament also serves as the qualification match for the Olympic games with the top three teams representing Africa.
Ghana came from behind on two occasions to draw 2-2.


The game was decided on penalty shootouts and the Meteors failed to progress despite an early advantage as South Africa were the first to miss.
The shootout ended 6-5 in favour of South Africa who booked the last ticket to Tokyo as hosts Egypt and Ivory Coast had already qualified by virtue of making the finals of the competition.


This was the second time in a row the Meteors lost on penalty shoutouts after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Ivory Coast in the semi-finals having recorded in 2-2 draw after extra time.
